Firearm Safety Fundamentals includes:
- The core of the class centers on building safe, responsible habits:
- Before Touching a Firearm
Essential mindset and preparatory steps every shooter must follow before handling any gun. This includes confirming the firearm is unloaded, controlling the muzzle direction, and establishing a safety-first approach that becomes automatic. - The Four Universal Firearm Safety Rules
The foundational rules that apply to every firearm, every time:- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
- Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you have made the decision to shoot.
- Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
- Before Touching a Firearm
These rules are explained in detail with real-world examples so they become second nature.
-
- Parts of a Handgun
Clear identification and function of major components on both semi-automatic pistols and revolvers (frame, slide/barrel, grip, trigger, magazine, sights, safety mechanisms, etc.). Understanding the parts helps students operate firearms confidently and recognize when something is not functioning correctly. - Ammunition Basics
How cartridges are constructed (case, primer, powder, and projectile), the difference between centerfire and rimfire, proper handling and storage of ammunition, and why matching the correct ammunition to the firearm is critical for safety and reliability. - Common Handgun Calibers
An overview of popular defensive and recreational calibers (including .22 LR, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .38 Special, and others). Students learn the general characteristics, recoil differences, and typical uses of each so they can make informed choices later.
