This depends on many factors. The simple answer is: A gun that the user is proficient with and practices with.
How often should I clean my firearm?
Modern firearms are exceptionally reliable. That said, they should be regularly maintained. This maintenance includes proper cleaning and lubrication. Ideally, you should clean your firearm after each shooting session. For guns carried on a regular basis, they should be inspected at least monthly for lent/debris common when the sidearm is routinely carried. This is a good FAQ.
Is a Sig Sauer better than a Glock?
That is a matter of personal opinion. The best gun for one person is not the best gun for someone else. Using a vehicle analogy, some people like Fords, some like Chevrolets of Dodges, and some like Toyotas. Find what will suit your needs for what you want the gun to accomplish for you. A gun used for bird hunting is a vastly different one required for hunting Elk. Likewise, a gun used for concealed carry will likely be much different than one used for protection from a bear attack. Begin with answering the question “what do I want the particular gun to do?” the next likely consideration is how the gun fits in your hand.

What is an AR and what does it stand for?
According to the National Shootings Sports Foundation, AR “stands for ArmaLite, after the company that developed it in the 1950s. AR does NOT stand for ‘assault rifle’ or ‘automatic rifle.'”
Is it OK to bring my pistol or long gun into the Gun store to get the right holster, sling, mount, etc?
We encourage conceal carry and open carry but please do not bring an uncased or un-holstered firearm in the gun store until you ask a staff member. They will assist you in making sure the firearm is not loaded. Most accidents happen when someone “is sure” their firearm is unloaded.
Can I dry fire a firearm that I am interested at the gun store?
Please ask permission before dry firing any firearm in the store. Certain guns like rim fire can be damaged with dry fire. The most common type is the .22 LR (long rifle). Please ask permission first.
Can I slap in a cylinder on a revolver like they do in the old movies?
When handling a revolver, please do not slap a cylinder. When you slap a cylinder in the revolver it can ruin the timing between each chamber of the cylinder itself to the barrel.
Can I come in and buy a firearm for another person as a gift?
No, this is called a “straw purchase” and it is illegal to knowingly allow the purchase. If you would like to purchase a firearm for a friend as a gift, please purchase a gift card and have them come in to fill out the paperwork. We are happy to walk both of you through the process and make it an enjoyable experience.
What’s the difference between an AR 15 and an AR 10?
The easiest difference to understand is related to caliber. The AR-10 and its variants are chambered in .308 Winchester/7.62×51 NATO. This .30 caliber round is popular with both hunters and militaries due to its range and effectiveness. The AR-15 is chambered in 5.56×45 NATO/.223 Remington. This allowed the rifle to be lighter and more controllable. These factors would lead to the wider adoption of the AR-15 for military, self-defense, and sports shooting.
How do I obtain a Concealed Handgun Permit in Archuleta County?

The Course needs to be a minimum of six hours and Live Range Fire is required to pass the program.
Are real guns used in the MILO simulator?
No, we use laser guns to shoot a series of different targets and scenarios. The only moving part of a Milo laser gun is the trigger. The slide is stationary and cannot be racked. As a precaution, we do not allow real firearms in our Milo room. If a customer has a live weapon on them, we request that it is placed in the locker provided.
What is the difference between target ammunition (FMJ) and self-defense ammunition (JHP/HP)?
Target ammunition is a full metal jacket (FMJ) ammo. It has been designed to go through the target and beyond anything that me be behind it. It will not cause the same amount of damage to the one target as a defense round will, however, it will go through many objects instead of stopping at one.
Self-defense ammunition, known as jacketed hollow point/hollow point (JHP/HP)ammo. This cavity or hollow point allows the bullet to expand upon impact causing a higher amount of damage to the object/target it hits.

Can I attend a Hunter Safety Course with my child?
While parents are encouraged to attend youth hunter safety courses with their child, they cannot take the class. Adult specific classes are provided.

When do I need to renew my Concealed Carry Permit?
Your Concealed Carry Permit is valid for 5 years. You must take a concealed carry refresher course within 6 months before you renew your license. If your license expires you must take the full concealed carry class again.
